Transforming Lives Through Traditional Craft: LEDP on Handmade Sheets in Gautam Budh Nagar

Programme Overview Abhivyakti Foundation, with the generous support and guidance of NABARD, successfully completed its Livelihood and Enterprise Development Programme (LEDP) focusing on handmade sheets in Gautam Budh Nagar district. The initiative has empowered 90 women participants from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) across three clusters – Dujana, Girdharpur, and Kachera – equipping them with both technical craftsmanship and entrepreneurial skills. The programme not only fostered skill development but also strengthened economic independence, social confidence, and community leadership among rural women. By combining traditional craft with modern market demands, the initiative created a pathway for sustainable livelihood, cultural preservation, and enterprise creation.

  • • Basic Stitching & Hemming Techniques: Step-by-step guidance helped women develop neat hand-stitching, border finishing, and decorative patterns.
  • • Design Principles & Creativity: Training included understanding color harmony, pattern alignment, and layout creation, enabling participants to design visually appealing sheets.
  • • Revival of Traditional Motifs: The programme emphasized incorporating local cultural and festival motifs, ensuring that each sheet carried a story reflecting regional heritage.

Success Story: Meena Kumari – From Homemaker to Entrepreneur
Project Image

Finding Her Creative Voice - Meena Kumari, 32, from Kachera, initially had limited confidence and primarily engaged in household sewing. She joined the LEDP with the aspiration to learn but was unsure about monetizing her skills.

The Transformation Journey - Through patient mentorship, Meena began experimenting with traditional motifs representing local festivals and heritage. By the third month, she had developed a signature style combining delicate embroidery with block-printed patterns, earning recognition in district exhibitions.

From Learning to Earning - Meena’s first order of 25 sheets from a boutique in Delhi generated ₹12,500. She subsequently formed a production collective of six women, creating a small workshop in Kachera. Collectively, they now generate ₹20,000–25,000 monthly, establishing financial independence and local recognition.

Ripple Effect - Meena conducts weekend training sessions, mentors younger women, and has branded her group as “Dharohar” (Heritage). She has also opened a joint bank account for transparent financial management. Her success has inspired other women to pursue entrepreneurship, creating a community-wide ripple effect.
