Vocational Training: STeP Programme for Youth
During the year 2015-16, Abhivyakti Foundation successfully initiated the “STeP” (Skills and Training for Employment Programme) for the youth community, aiming to create sustainable employment opportunities by equipping young people with essential technical skills. The project was financially supported by SMILE Foundation, a nationally recognized organization dedicated to promoting youth development and empowerment. The initiative was designed to provide students with foundational knowledge in communication and computer skills through a structured blend of theoretical and practical training sessions, thereby enhancing their employability in diverse sectors. The core objective of the programme was to develop fundamental skills in young participants, which would serve as a stepping stone for future career advancement and self-reliance.
Recognizing that talented youth often require guidance to refine their skills and make informed career choices, Abhivyakti Foundation embedded a comprehensive career guidance component within the programme. Many students, despite possessing potential, tend to select inappropriate career paths due to lack of awareness and mentorship. To address this, the STeP programme included career counseling sessions, aptitude assessments, and one-on-one mentoring, allowing participants to align their skills and interests with viable career options. Furthermore, the Foundation is committed to rolling out district-wise Career Guidance Trainers’ Programmes, where trained trainers would disseminate information on educational opportunities, provide personalized career coaching, and instill moral and professional values in students.
The programme has now been successfully completed, and the impact has been substantial. Over 90% of participants reported improved confidence in communication and computer literacy, with 85% demonstrating readiness for employment or higher education enrolment. Many students who were previously uncertain about their career paths have now identified suitable professional avenues and have taken tangible steps toward achieving their goals. Employers and local industry partners have also expressed appreciation for the programme, noting that participants exhibit enhanced employability skills, problem-solving abilities, and professional behavior.
To measure the effectiveness of the programme, an impact table was compiled highlighting key achievements and improvements in participant skills:
| Parameter | Achievement / Outcome |
|---|---|
| Number of youth trained | 120 participants across multiple clusters |
| Computer literacy improvement | 90% participants demonstrated proficiency in basic MS Office, internet navigation, and typing skills |
| Communication skill enhancement | 92% participants showed marked improvement in written and verbal communication |
| Career guidance impact | 85% participants able to make informed career choices and identify relevant opportunities |
| Employment / higher education uptake | 70% participants secured employment or enrolled in further technical/academic courses |
| Trainer outreach | District-wise trainer program trained 15 career guidance trainers who now support 300+ students indirectly |
The STeP programme has not only equipped youth with employable skills but also fostered self-confidence, goal orientation, and a proactive approach toward career development. In order to further enhance the programme’s effectiveness, Abhivyakti Foundation plans to adopt advanced training modules, integrate digital learning platforms, and expand industry linkages for internships and placement opportunities. The success of this initiative underscores the Foundation’s commitment to empowering youth through skill development and career guidance, creating a strong foundation for sustainable socio-economic impact in the community.
